The French industry is enduring that around 30-40 films made in a year will occur, with a largely Auteur-led European co-production, as it is estimated that there will be a decline in Canal+’s investment in French films over the next three years.
“Producers are beginning to realize what’s going to happen,” said Manuel Alduy, film director at French TV. “We’re worried that the number of ‘middle films’ will really diminish and that a budgeted film will be a film worth between 40,000 and 6 million euros. ”
Canal+ is a choice partner to support films from visionary authures and emerging talents known in France as “diversity films.”
“This decline in investment is very worrying for us as independent producers,” says co-founder of upcoming films Fanny Rittal and Jeremy Trulyl’s film Julie Billy, Naomi Denhamur’s films. Green eyes Funded by Canal+.
“As film costs aren’t low, investment cuts will inevitably have an impact. Inflation continues. If Canal+ dips down and doesn’t support films with bold autervision or without a recognizable cast, there’s a risk of losing diversity.”
“It’s a tragedy because no filmmakers are born,” said Eduardo Sosa Soria, producer of Paris-based La Cat.
Canal+ has earned many films in advance, including competition titles, including this year’s Cannes Film Festival alpha, privacy and Case 137.
The investment has been reduced from over 600 million euros between 2022 and 2024 to 480 million euros over the next three years.
