Residents of western Turkey and Greek islands woke up on Monday evening when a strong 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook the Turkish coastal town of Marmaris.
Turkish Home Minister Ali Erikaya died in the town of Fethiye, despite being taken to a hospital, a 14-year-old girl died in Fethiye town, Turkish Home Minister Ali Erikaya said. She was suffering from a panic attack.
According to the European Earthquake Centre, the 68km deep earthquake was felt on the islands of Dodecan.
At least 69 people have been injured after trying to jump from height due to panic caused by tremors caused by strong-feeling tremors on the largest island of Rhodes in the Dodecan Islands near the Turkish border.
No injuries have been reported at Rhodes. However, tourists visiting the island said they had been awakened to violent shaking.
Travel agency TUI warned tourists in the area to “settle and follow safety instructions provided by accommodation and local officials.”

“It doesn’t have a major impact on the surface. There’s no tsunami, and more than anything, there’s no rich aftershock sequence,” he pointed out.
The trembling was “very severe for the residents of Rhodes and the surrounding area. There is no major damage from here.”
