The collapse of the Dutch government
The panel explains how the Dutch government collapsed due to internal tensions within the coalition over the conflict with transitional policies surrounding the 10-point immigration scheme pushed by far-right politician Geert Wilders.
Raquel García Hermidavan der Walle said the Wilders could not rule.
“He has done what he has done for the past 20 years. It uses migration as an excuse to hide the incompetence of his own party or his own minister, and is unable to fulfill the promises they made to the citizens,” she said.
A new election will take place in October.
Ukrainian refugees in the EU
The panel also discussed the millions of Ukrainians living in the European Union today, three years after the full-scale Russian invasion. Thanks to the EU’s temporary protection directive, they received residency, access to health care and education.
At a meeting of the EU Council in Luxembourg this week, 27 countries expressed support for their proposal to expand temporary protections for more than 4 million Ukrainians until March 4, 2027.
“This is a great example of what a refugee, a real refugee, is, should be, and should be,” Fabrice Legali said.
EU housing – price through the roof?
Finally, the panel reflects the acute housing crisis across Europe. House prices have risen 48% in the EU, according to Eurostat. It’s even worse in Ireland and Lithuania. The mayor from everyone this week called for urgent EU action and a coordinated housing strategy.
Senator Mark Duffy of western Ireland said support “from Europe” is much appreciated.
