Heather Morgan was hired as head of IMAX’s global distribution and is replacing Craig Dehmel, who resigned nine years later.

Morgan recently served as Chief Content Officer at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, overseeing the curation of the company’s portfolio across the global network. She reports to Chief Content Officer Jonathan Fischer, based in IMAX Corporation’s Playa Vista office in the Los Angeles area.

Steve Garrett will continue his role as head of domestic distribution and assume an expanded role as head of IMAX’s alternative content.

Fisher highlighted Morgan’s facility to develop programming strategies that use data, creativity and audience insights. “As demand for the IMAX experience skyrockets and the content portfolio expands to over 130 movies and events each year, Heather’s expertise will be important in bringing fans to maximise the value of a unique global platform.”

Dehmel is an industry veteran who arrived in 2016 after serving as International Distribution EVP at Fox. During his nine years at IMAX, the company said it provided the highest box office results in its history. The number of films, events and experiences programmed annually across the global network, including expanding to local language releases has more than doubled.

Fisher added: “On behalf of Rich (Gerfond, CEO of IMAX) and everyone at IMAX, I would like to express my gratitude and praise for Craig Demel and his company’s contribution to IMAX over the course of deep, transformative time.

Morgan said: “IMAX has reached the next level in recent years as the gold standard for immersive entertainment, but there is much more potential left for filmmakers and creators around the world to create for this platform.”

In his role as Chief Content Officer for Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas, Morgan directs film curation on 42 locations and 350 screens, displaying and “events” over 1,600 releases a year. She previously worked in executive roles in content and programming at Harkins Theaters and AMC Entertainment.
