Ursula von der Leyen struck a rebellious note on Monday as she defended her president from a motion of condemnation expressed by the radical rights of the European Parliament that vowed not to “rewrite history to extremists.”
“We should not have any illusions about the threats faced by democracy. We are entering an era of struggle between democracy and iliberalism. We see an astonishing threat from extremist parties who want to polarize our society with disinformation.”
“There is no evidence that they have an answer, but there is ample evidence that many people are supported by doll masters in our enemies and in Russia and elsewhere,” she continued, pointing to the bench where the far right is sitting. “And you just look at some of the signatories of this motion to understand what I mean.”
Her intervention was marked by constant boos and heckling, prompting Roberta Metosora of the European Parliament to “stop the interruption.”
Von Der Leyen seemed unsteadily ecstatic as he promised to continue working towards “compromise” and “unification.”
The debate takes place amid an increasing number of signs of dissatisfaction and frustration among the centristic coalitions that favored von der Leyen. Re-elected For the second term.
