Brendan Canty’s ‘Christy’ wins best Irish film at Galway Film Fleadh 2025

Brendan Chianty Christie The 37th edition of the Irish Festival was close to yesterday (13th July), and won the Best Irish Film Award for Galway Film Fleadh.

Christie Based on a short film by Kanti of the same name, it follows at age 17 after he was abandoned from a suburban foster home and moved in with Cork’s estranged older half-brother.

Danny Power, Emma Willis and Chris Wally Starr are British-Ireland co-produced between Marina Brackenberry and Meredith Duff of Wayward Films, and co-produced between London’s Rory Gilmartin and Dublin-based sleeper film.

BBC Film and Screen Ireland supports the project, and the charade represents sales. Altitude and Wildcard will release films at British and Ireland cinemas later this year, respectively.

Christie It took its world premiere as the opening film of the 2025 Generation 14plus competition at Berlin Rail, and was also performed in Carlovy, opening the Translivania International Film Festival.

Further award winners at Galway include Edwin Murane and Adam O’Keefe Horseshoethis was named Best Ireland’s first feature. The comedy drama films across Srigo and Raytrim counties, following four estranged brothers who, after their father’s death, are reunited just to unearth their own deep secrets.

Gar O’Rourke Sanatorium I took home some of the best Ireland documentaries. The DOC premiered in CPH:DOX and is set in southern Ukraine, with mud treatment and electrotherapy continuing at Kuyalnik Sanatorium despite the nearby war. Trisha Ziff’s Jerry Adams – The Man of Barimulphie Former President Sinn Fair Adams was awarded the best international documentary to attend the festival.

Lance Daly trad Winner of the Audience Award. That’s a follow-up Black ’47a huge success in Ireland in 2018, winning $1.3 million (1.6 million euros). Trad takes a talented fiddler and her younger brother leave the house in Gaertacht, Donegal, to the road along with a group of wandering musicians.

Over the course of six days, Fleadh screened 97 feature films and held the Galway Filmfare. There, directors, writers and producers held over 700 pitch meetings with executives from Netflix, Mubi, Vue Lumiere, Bunkside, Buide, Cornerstone, Hanway, Hanway, the main character, BFI, BBC films, and Movie 4.

The winner of the best marketplace project was awarded to the black comedy of Christian Nicolesque in Romania 10 MickeysWhile the pitching award was sent to Carol Murphy’s 19th century Ireland Hungry Fork Fable Body + Blood.
