The heavy rain that denounced South Korea for five days killed 17 people and 11 have disappeared, the government said on Sunday.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, one person was found dead after his house collapsed during heavy rains, then washed down into a swollen stream in Gapion, a town northeast of Seoul.
The ministry said 10 people have been killed and four have been reported missing in a southern town in Sancheong after a severe downpour caused landslides, collapse of the house and flash flooding.
One person said he had died in the southern city of Gwanju, according to a report from the province. Seven other people remained missing in Gwangju and Gapyeong.
People were also killed when cars were buried in soil and concrete earlier this week after the collapse of overpass walls that collapsed in Osan just south of Seoul during heavy rains. The other three were found dead in a submerged car, a swollen stream and a southern basement south.
As of 4pm local time on Sunday, around 2,730 people remained evacuated from their homes, the department’s report said. Rain stopped in most of South Korea, and heavy rain warnings were unleashed nationwide.
The southern region has been receiving up to 600-800 millimeters of rain since Wednesday, according to a report from the province.
President Lee Jae Myung expressed deep sympathy for those who lost their loved ones and suffered financial damage. Lee said the government will push for the government to designate areas where it will be hit hard by heavy rain as a special disaster zone. This designation provides them with greater financial and other recovery support from the government.
