Legal proceedings against Nintendo’s pocket pair Palworld seemed inevitable, and when they finally arrived, it was big news. When I first saw the video Motiram’s Light – Another open world survival game, this time from Tencent’s subsidiary Polaris Quest – a similar series of events seemed almost certain to happen. Sony was constantly tormented by the game as he shared many aesthetic similarities between Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West. Now it has launched a lawsuit against Tencent for copyright and trademark infringement, describing Motiram’s Light as “ripping” and “Sravish clones” in the Horizon series.
There are some obvious similarities between Motiram and Horizon’s light, but the biggest one is the inclusion of that “mekaimaru.” Robotic creatures can be found in many games, but many of the ones designed by Polaris Est are very similar to those found in Aloi’s Adventures. On top of that, the player characters and other human NPCs are dressed in tribal clothes and are set in an open world that is carried over by these mechanical beasts, making it difficult to ignore the similarities.
Sony, filed in California court, is currently suing Tencent, seeking damages for copyright infringement. The company calls Motiram’s Light a “slavish clone” of Horizon Zero Dawn and Forbidden West, and believes the close similarity between them and this new survival game will confuse consumers.
Interestingly, Sony claims in the lawsuit that Tencent had approached earlier and collaborated on a new game on the horizon. Sony rejected these plans, but only Motiram’s light appeared on the line later.
Having seen the full lawsuit, Gamespot reports that Sony is seeking damages for each game in the Horizon franchise where Motiram’s Light infringes. They also want to destroy all of Tencent’s products and marketing materials that feature “prohibited marks.”
Given the blatant horizon similarity, what is rather strange from the perspective of both parties is that Motiram’s light appears to be in the development of Sony’s PS5. It was initially revealed as a game that appears on PCs and consoles where no specific platforms are mentioned. However, some trailers posted on the Chinese website last showed the PlayStation logo.
Tencent has not yet responded to Sony’s lawsuit, but I feel this is snowballed in all Pokémon and Palworld situations.
