The long-standing VFX House Glassworks has been closed.

Glassworks was founded in London in 1995 and has studios in Amsterdam and Barcelona..

The company, which focused primarily on commercials, but also had its film and television division, struggled with challenging market conditions.

Its film and TV section credits include the series chaos (Netflix) rig (Amazon Prime) and Ja Bayona Features Snow Society (Netflix) Monster Call (Focus function).

The business recently closed its office in Amsterdam and cites “a very challenging market situation that has impacted many people in our industry.” At that point, “Our London office continues to operate fully. The team continues to offer world-class VFX across commercials, feature films and HETV, with several major projects currently in production.”

However, GlassWorks is currently closing its London office and closing its business.

In a statement issued by the company, “The last 15 months have been a period of turbulence in both commercial and narrative fields, and the reduced opportunities exacerbated by increasing pressures of global competition give more to the world of visual arts and it is truly disastrous to be forced to close the door under such circumstances.

“Glassworks was more than just a company. It was a pioneer of creativity. It fostered an environment where artistic boundaries were constantly pushed against and the most complex visions brought to breathtaking lives. The name became synonymous with uncompromising quality, bold innovation and deeply personalized services.”

“Our idea is with all individuals who are part of the Glassworks family. Their talent and crafts enrich our screens and imagination, engraved in the history of visual effects, and continues to inspire artists of the coming generation.”

Castle Hill Insolvency is about managing Glassworks’ processes that enter into liquidation.

Glassworks is the latest victim in the operation of VFX companies that have faced great challenges in recent years. MPC and its parent company Technicolor fell over earlier this year, with Dublin-based posthouse Windmill Lane Pictures. Photos of London-based animation and VFX specialist jellyfish were stopped operating in March, but were revived in June with support from Troubadour Studios.
