One person was killed and at least 29 people were injured on Sunday evening after a 6.1 magnitude earthquake in Barkesri Province struck the town.

The tremors resulted in more than dozens of buildings collapsed, and shock waves felt about 200km north in Turkey’s largest city in Istanbul.

The injured were trapped under a building that collapsed after a trembling.

“We had two citizens who fled ourselves. Four citizens were rescued through very prompt search and rescue efforts,” said Turkish Minister of Home Affairs Ali Yarikaya.

“Unfortunately, one of the rescued people, an 81-year-old elderly person, lost their lives.”

Most of the collapsed buildings were abandoned and unused, Yerlikaya said. Minarets at the two mosques also fell, he added.

The injured were not in serious condition.

The earthquake was felt in the cities of Izmir, Kutahiya, Yaroba, Istanbul, Manisa, Usak, Aidin, Esquisehir, Sakariya, Tekildag and Central Barikhel, causing at least 20 Araushocks.

The country’s disaster and emergency management agencies have urged citizens not to enter the damaged buildings.

Turkish President Recept Tayyip Erdogan has issued a statement hoping for a quick recovery for affected citizens.

“May God protect our kingdom from all sorts of disasters,” he wrote to X.

Türkiye – a country above some major fault lines – is prone to earthquakes.

In 2023, the 7/8 earthquake caused devastation in the southern and southeastern states of the country. This killed more than 53,000 people and was mostly trapped under the tiled bleeds of a collapsed building.

Experts warn that another major earthquake in Türkiye could cause serious damage and loss of life in the country.
