Exclusive: Repurposing Bangkok-based sales agent secured the rights to Siyou Tan’s adult drama Amebaahead of the world premiere of the film in Toronto.
Singaporean director Tang’s feature debut revolves around an Elite All Girls Chinese school about a 16-year-old girl and three rebellious classmates. Their urge to resist authoritarian teachers drives them to discover the erased stories of the mythical gangs who ruled the towns of colonial Singapore. They then decided to form their own gang in modern-day Singapore, a country that feeds pigeons and chewing gum.
The film premieres on September 10th at Discovery Strand in Toronto.

Borgia’s production company Akanga Film Asia leads collaborations between Singapore, Netherance, France, Spain, South Korea. Co-producers are Volya Films, Les Films D’Antoine, Mararía Films and Widelog Office. It is also supported by the Singapore Film Commission, Hubert Balz Fund, aides Cinema Dumond, and Sfilm Rain Grant.
Tan has made a reputation through a short film that includes Cannes 2024’s two-week selection Cold cutLocarno 2021 title Strawberry cheesecakeand Hello AmaIt was screened in Toronto in 2019 and was in Berlin.
She is one of six emerging directors involved in recent anthology films Kopitiam Daysupported by the InfoComm Media Development Authority (IMDA) to celebrate Singapore’s 60th year of independence.
The repurposed slate also includes Vietnam’s director Ash Mayfair. Young people’s skin (Also produced by Borgia), Mahde Hasan’s, director of Bangladeshi, won the special juj award at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF) last month. Sand Cityscoop up Karlovy’s Proxima Grand Prize.
