Today, on August 18th, President Donald Trump is holding several EU leaders to discuss the future of a war-torn country with his Ukrainian counterpart, Voldy Mirzelensky. After Vice President JD Vance accused Zelensky of ungratefulness during a February meeting, the Ukrainian leaders said the word “thank you” four times in the first 10 seconds of Monday’s brief remarks, CNN reported. “Thank you for the invitation and thank you for stopping your efforts, personal efforts, killings and stopping this war. Thank you for taking advantage of this opportunity, thank you to your wife,” he said.
The summit meeting between Trump and European leaders has concluded, but the leaders are staying in the White House and continuing to negotiate. Trump said he would not rule out sending troops to Ukraine if necessary to ensure the country’s security against future Russian attacks. Sending the US military is an important development that can make it easier for Zelensky to agree to other aspects of the proposed deal.
“President Putin agreed that Russia would accept Ukraine’s security guarantees. This is one of the key points we need to consider, and we’ll consider it at the table,” Trump said. “I am optimistic, collectively, that we can reach an agreement to stop future attacks on Ukraine, and I don’t think that is the case in practice.”
“We will work with Ukraine. We will work with everyone. If there is peace, we will make sure that peace will remain for the long term. This is very long-term. We are not talking about two years of peace, it will be this confusion. I doubt about it,” he said. He pressed further on Kiev’s guarantees by reporters, Trump said he had “a lot of help in terms of security” in the postwar settlement, but he emphasized that Europe would be “a first-rate line of defense” despite the assistance of the US. “We’re going to discuss it today, but we’re giving them very good protection, very good security,” he said.
