Matchmaking is a hot topic in PVP games. Even among some of the most popular, the debate is furious about unfair matches. It’s easy to understand why. There’s nothing worse than logging on in ranked sessions and finding other teams stacked up with players that are far better than you. but, Marvel Rival Players suspected another issue: that the game had adopted EOMM or matchmaking with optimized engagement. However, developer Netease addresses these concerns directly with a new video posted on social media.

For those who don’t know what Eomm is, it is a system in which developers deliberately manipulate matchmaking to attract players. For example, if you’ve been on a losing streak in a three-match losing streak, the EOMM-based system will match you with the better players on your team, with the worse players on the opposing side, and the big wins will hope you will play in several more matches.

The matchmaking system is often obscure, so players tend to guess what’s going on under the hood. The regulars of Marvel rivals are the same, and many feel confident that the trick is ongoing, but the developers behind the multiplayer games are shooting down ideas.

“We want to be clear,” says lead combat designer Zhiyong. “Marvel rivals don’t use Eomm.” Zhiyong continues to explain why some players struggle with matchmaking. He says that due to the large team size of Marvel rivals, factors other than individual skills can affect team performance. For example, teamwork and coordination “can sway the outcome,” he says.

Zhiyong, developer of Marvel Rivals, says the game doesn't use Eomm.

With this logic, matchmaking of 1V1 PVP games is easy. However, if you have six players per team, even the other side with the same average score may not be able to perform the same. He also points out that the lack of roll locks could be a factor. If your best players remain in roles they are unfamiliar with, it can seriously hinder your chances.

Zhiyong says Marvel Rivals does not implement a role cue to give players “freedom” and encourage “more diverse strategies.” Role-based matchmaking can also “enhance the queue time.” However, it appears that players have reached a consensus that if they ensure a better quality match, they prefer longer cue times. If Marvel rivals test their theory, whether they say the same thing while they’re stuck in a 10-minute queue is a whole other thing.

Players will respond to the announcement of Marvel rivals.

Another complaint is that the placement needs to be implemented to help the game show the player’s skills more accurately and help the matchmaking system create a more equitable match. However, many players appreciate the integrity they have from Netease, even if they are not satisfied with the current matchmaking system.
