Fatma Al Remaihi, CEO of Doha Film Institute (DFI), has arrested him in opposition to the attacks by Israeli settlers of Israeli police at Hamdan Ballal, co-director of the Oscar-winning documentary. There are no other lands.
“The recent attacks on Palestinian filmmaker Hamdan Baral, even the most prestigious award, prove that even the Oscar’s most prestigious award, does not provide security from the violent oppression of occupation,” said Al Remaihi, speaking at the opening of DFI’s Kumuralab’s 2025 edition. Baral was released the day after his arrest.
Speaking to mark the 15th anniversary of DFI this year, Al Remaich said:
“The promise of peace and ceasefire is an attempt to cover stories for ongoing dehumanization and to silence voices from the community.
“In a world where many prominent cultural events and institutions choose silence over solidarity and voices of protest face alienation, we need to stand firm,” the CEO continued. “It’s our duty as a storyteller and as an ambassador for humanity. It’s just as simple as that.”
This year’s Kumra began with a busy encounter and gift event in the courtyard of the Islamic Museum in Doha. Many participants wore insignias to support Palestine, including Palestinian football shirts.
Allemaich’s speech was followed by a brief speech from Palestinian filmmaker and DFI arts advisor Elia Suleiman.
“All the young filmmakers here will soon discover that they will try to impose some tariffs on their dream image,” Suleiman joked.
“We can’t put boundaries, tariffs (films),” the director continued seriously. “The film violates boundaries and intersects them.”
Kumura Deputy Director Hanaa Issa welcomed participating guests and a record 55 countries were represented at the 2025 event, presenting 49 projects in the fictional features, documentaries, shorts and series.
Meet-and-Greet participants included last month’s best international feature Oscar winners, Quamra Advisor Rithy Panh and Walter Salles. I’m still here.
