Former Sundance Film Festival director Tabitha Jackson has been named director of Film Forum, a four-screen arthouse cinema center in Manhattan, effective February 23.

A British industry veteran based in New York, he spent the past two years on research fellowships at the MIT Open Documentary Lab, the Royal Shakespeare Company, and the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. The Rockefeller Foundation training spoke about the state of trust in institutions and mediated the reality and its impact on the documentary.

Jackson began his career as a researcher, producer and director at the BBC, and later served as commissioning editor for arts, performance and animation, and executive producer at Film4.

She was named director of Sundance Institute’s documentary film program in 2013 and festival director in 2020, leading the event through the pandemic with two fully digital editions.

“‘Independent, non-commercial arthouse film’ — those four words encapsulate everything I’ve championed throughout my career,” Jackson said. “This appointment feels like coming home, as my local movie theater, Film Forum, is also explained.”

“After a search process that included numerous highly qualified candidates, our board and staff quickly reached a strong consensus on Tabitha, which is not surprising given her passion for film and strong management history in the nonprofit arts sector,” said Gray Coleman, Film Forum Board Chair and National Search Committee Co-Chair.
