Film production was buoyant in France in 2024, up 3.7% from 2023, according to the annual report from CNC, the country’s national film organization.
Total investment in French films reached 1.44 billion euros, up 7.5% in 2023. This is the second-best in history since its 2008 record of 14.9 billion euros.
The total number of French films produced remained stable at 231, comparable to the average of 236 films in 2023 and 233 films a year.
The number of co-productions has increased to 130 titles. This was 10 higher than 2023, and 62 in 2023, leading to an increase in foreign majority films that were 78 in 2023. Belgium was also the top territory as a minority co-producer with 17 films and 14 films prior to Germany.
Foreign contributions to French cinema increased by 16% to 275 million euros, while French investment increased by 6% to 11.7 billion euros.
Broadcasters accounted for 35% of total investment, with 7% increasing by 2023. Canal+ led the bill at 180.4 million euros, followed by Arte with 60.2m, TF1 with 54.6m on TF1, 36.7m on M6 with 2.8m.
Global streamers accounted for 18.6% of their total investments of 76.4 million euros from Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video and Max.
Public assistance, including automated and selective aid from CNC and local funds, remains stable, accounting for 7.6% of the funds at 89.2 million euros.
Budget boom
The average budget for a film made in France was 5.09 million euros in 2024, the highest ever budget since 2016, the highest for the fourth consecutive year.
The rise was driven by a larger budgeted French startup, defined as over 7 million euros, with a total of 50 films made in that category, accounting for 21.6% from 37 in 2023.
However, “half-bad” movies are in decline. Films with budgets of 4 million to 7 million euros account for 16.9% of films produced annually, with 17 films less than the previous year. Films that range from 1 million to 4 million euros account for 37.2% of the total project, 13 fewer than in 2023.
Films with budgets under 1 million euros account for 24% of production, representing a total of 56 projects.
The most expensive production of 2024 was Luc Besson’s Dracula – The Story of Love And Cedric Jimenez’s Chien 51, Although their budget has not been revealed.
The average budget for fiction films is 5.3 million euros, an increase of 17% compared to 2023. The average budget for animated films was 18.1 million euros, three times the average last year’s average of 6.4 million euros.
However, the average budget for films directed by women fell from an average of 3.9 million euros in 2023 to 3.5 million euros in 2024. Only two films by female filmmakers had budgets of over 10 million euros. The French female director was just 25% behind the films that started France. This is a total of 56 titles per year, comparable to 2023 after a record of 29.8% in 2022.
