Destruction is always set battlefield Competition aside. Whether it’s a skyscraper that falls from above, a house wall being wiped out, or a huge Zeppelin scattered across the frontline, the ability to literally level the arena is at the heart of the multiplayer gaming experience. This is a key part of Destruction’s ongoing testing of EA for the next game in the series, and new updates from the team show how the mechanics are evolving for the future.
To avoid another Battlefield 2042 style disaster, EA is building the next game in the series with Battlefield Labs. This pre-launch testing environment is filled with real players as EA brings them to the early stages of development to gather very large feedback. I don’t hear much about what the Labs team is doing from outside, but sometimes EA drops updates and the latest ones are about the trademark destruction of FPS games.
“Our destruction goal is focused on adding additional depth of gameplay by being able to rebuild the environment and turn the surroundings into tactical benefits,” writes EA. “For example, you might thrust through walls to surprise your enemies, reshape the battlefield and create new paths to the capture zone, or you could lower the building and take out attacking teams.
“We design destruction around easily identifiable visual and audio languages so that we can understand what can be destroyed, altered or converted via gameplay.”

EA says that the “applecore” from the outside while collapses, and that various surface types will deteriorate visually before they break. This means that all types of sustained damage can contribute to the structural integrity of a building while opening up certain tactical advantages (or disadvantages depending on the opponent).
One way EA can enhance these features is by using tile ble. Destroyed concrete and other materials remain on the battlefield. The battlefield can be used as a new cover and protection from enemy fires. Maybe a pile of debris can act as a lamp, or a collapsed wall can protect you from the tank – your opportunities are endless.
As the EA explains, this is not the final state of the mechanic. “Destruction will be a continuous topic within our theatre. We will continue to test these and other disruption areas through upcoming play sessions.”
If you want to take part in the ongoing EA test, brush up exactly how to sign up for Battlefield Labs. EA has more playtests and feedback planned, so it’s never too late to get involved.
