The Tragedy of Bayesian Yachts: Is there an answer to what happened in the end?

After the original operation planned in January 2025 had to be delayed, the now famous Bayesian yacht is set to eventually be lifted from depth.

As reported in atlasgazetteWhen the incident occurred, Bayesian sank $37 million (32.1 million euros) on August 1, 2024, and is now lying 165 feet below the sea just off the coast of Porticello, Italy. Sadly, the sinking resulted in seven people on the yacht losing their lives, including British billionaire Mike Lynch and his daughter Hannah.

Will the Bayesian yacht be retrieved?

The salvage operation was originally intended to begin earlier this year, but winter weather was paid for those plans. This meant that we would be further delayed in getting answers about what actually happened as part of an investigation into the cause of the death.

ShipBuilder continues to deny that the yacht’s design may be technically flawed in any way. In fact, they insisted that the container, like the famous Titanic, was “unsinkable.” Instead, they pointed the fingers firmly to the crew, claiming that the mistake had been made that led to the tragic incident.

How many people died on Bayesian yachts?

Several crew members have been deployed during the investigation, including the yacht’s captain. The UK investigation process sees the death of Mike Lynch and his daughter, as well as the deaths of Morgan Stanley International Bank Chairman Jonathan Bloomer, 70, and his 71-year-old wife Judy Bloomer, all British citizens.

Others who died included US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo and Ricardo Thomas, a Canadian antiguan citizen who worked as a yacht chef.

Who will raise the Bayesian yacht?

Currently, Italian authorities are trying to unlock the two Dutch rescue companies the 540-tonne shipwreck, and operations are expected to begin later this month. One part that is considered valuable evidence is the hull, and authorities say it is unlikely that this will be lifted until around mid-May. As expected in criminal investigations of this nature, local prosecutors have imposed physical storage restrictions on the rescue process, which is likely to increase the technical complexity of this part of the operation.

The rescue operation is part of an ongoing criminal investigation, but this has not stopped it from becoming a kind of attraction for tourists. According to the Italian press, local hotels have seen an increase in bookings from those who want to witness Bayesian yachts rising to the surface.
