After the funeral of Pope Francis in front of many world leaders, Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelensky met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the Chigi Palace.

The conversation between the two lasted less than an hour. According to a memo released by Chigi Palace, “Leaders have reiterated their support for President Trump’s efforts to achieve just and lasting peace that can guarantee the future of Ukraine’s security, sovereignty and freedom.”

“Meloni, on behalf of the government, expressed her sadness of her dolmanship towards the victims of the recent Russian attacks, renewed her firm condemnation of such conduct, underscoring the urgency of an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, and the need for a concrete commitment to the launch of a peace process by Moscow.

The prime minister “welcomes Ukraine’s full preparations for an immediate ceasefire. Currently, Russia is expected to specifically demonstrate its willingness to pursue peace,” the memo concludes.

Meetings with other leaders

Previously, Zelensky was in private consultations with US President Donald Trump, incumbent Emmanuel Macron at Elise Palace and British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer, within the St. Peter’s Basilica.

“When I saw Donald Trump and Voldi Zelensky talking about peace at the funeral of the “Pope of Peace” it was very important,” Meloni told the Daily La Repubblica, calling it a “historic day.”

Zelensky and Starge held a bilateral meeting in the gardens of Villa Walkonsky. A meeting was also planned between Zelensky and President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Reyen.
