Berlinale Forum friendship comedy ‘Fwends’ acquired for sales

Exclusive: UK Sales Outfit Rapt Films International has won global rights outside of Australia, New Zealand and China for Sophie Summerville’s Australian comedy fwendsin front of Cannes.

fwends It held its world premiere at the Berlin Forum section in February this year, and won the Caligari Film Awards, honoring innovative films in the section.

Emmanuel Matana and Melissa Gunn play two friends who are reunited in Melbourne over the weekend as they try to navigate the ups and downs of life.

It was the debut feature of Australian film director Summerville, after the short film Linda 4 Eva and Peeping Performed at the Sydney Film Festival. Somerville also worked on the film with fellow Australian producers Carter Rooker and Sarah Hedge Taylor.

Somerville described the film as “my love letter to Melbourne in the spring,” while Rapt CEO Russell Webber calls it “a moveable totem for the lasting friendship of today’s youth.”

Rapt’s sales slate also includes the BFI Flare Premier departure Tribeca Trans Gamer Documentary Break the game.
