He was charged in Greece with a crime related to Greece and was brought to trial and jail after allegedly photographing and videotaping a military operation at the Alexandro Polis Strategic Port in northeastern Greece.
The port serves as a key logistics hub for the operations of the US and NATO, and will promote the movement of military equipment and staff in support of Ukraine and NATO member states in Eastern Europe.
The unappointed man was arrested on April 29 in a joint operation by police and the Greek National Intelligence Service.
Authorities said he was “acting on behalf of another individual” and sent the recording to the person using an encrypted messaging app, but did not provide further details.
However, the man’s lawyer told the court that he had not sent any sensitive information and that photos of the NATO operation have already been widely seen in the media.
According to state television, citing Greek law enforcement officials, the suspect is a 59-year-old Greek citizen born in Georgia and is investigating potential relationships with Russian security services through contact in Lithuania.
The suspect, escorted by police officers, appeared before the magistrate of Alexandreu Police for a preliminary hearing on Friday.
The judicial authorities said they rejected all charges, adding that there was no trial date set.
