Clair Obscur: Exposition 33, The Hundrement Line: Last Defense Academy, and Like a Dragon: Hawaii Pirate Yazuka, 2025 was a pretty good year for RPGs. But maybe one of the best Citizens’ Sleeping 2. This is a melancholic, hopeful, stressful spaceship journey through cyberpunk space. Now, to celebrate the 3rd anniversary of the original game, Studio Jump of the Age has released a free tabletop RPG. All you need is a printed game document, 10 six-sided dice, a pencil and an eraser.
A solo tabletop game called Spindlejack follows Courier 2, the location of Citizen Sleeper 2, the space station Spindle. Just like video games, it’s about work and routines. Take shifts and earn credits, boost your reps, zoom the space station to deliver packages. However, you will need to manage the heat of your bike while it is running. If it overheats, delivery will fail. If the person in charge falls to a specific number, the game is over. The game print comes with a map to mark your trip and a grid to lay out.
In other words, it’s a micro version of video games’ tough decisions and resource management. Citizens’ sleepers were painted in large numbers by relatives on the table, so in part there was a breath of fresh air. If you’re interested in some of the best RPGs of recent years, this is a way to taste the system.
