The creator of Hard West 2 and last year’s Rogue Waters, Ice Code Game, created a niche by mashing up tactical combat designs in a supernaturally permeated historical environment. Hard West and its sequels take place in the 19th century American West, haunted by demonic creatures, but Rogue Waters offers strategic pirate swashbucklings in monster-filled seas. Now, the studio continues to do the same with the announcement of its latest projects, the Hunt Showdown blend and the XCOM 2 blend. The frontier of nightmare.
Nightmare Frontier looks blushing at first, like the spiritual successor to the Hard West Game. It’s also a kind of strategy game set in the American West, where players have to compete with bloodthirsty monsters. However, from this foundation, a rather different approach is required, adding a risk-focused design style to the Hardwest formula.
In the Nightmare Frontier, players control a group of hopeless scavengers on their mission to find and collect booty in towns regularly attacked by creatures called Dreadweavers. Like extraction shooters like Hunt Showdown, the scavengers need to decide when to fight their enemies and increase their rewards as the danger grows, or run away, or risk losing what they have got. If the players are not fighting, they will need to create and upgrade gears from the resources they collect and unlock new skills to prepare for the next battle.
Nightmare Frontier is scheduled to be released in early access on Steam this summer. For more information about the WISHLIST or Steam pages, click here.
