German Prime Minister Friedrich Merz visited Warsaw on Wednesday to hold talks with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tasz.

The pair discusses issues of importance to the European Union and are urgently involved in international issues, defense and security, as well as covered relations with Germany.

At a joint press conference after the two leaders’ closing door meeting, Meltz emphasized the importance of ensuring EU border security and vowed to take steps to tackle illegal immigration.

Friedrich Merz said Germany will join the initiative headers of the Netherlands, Denmark and Italy to strengthen EU migration policies.

“There are initiatives by several European countries, including Denmark, the Netherlands and Italy. Many countries have joined the initiative and are strengthening European asylum and migration policies,” Mertz said.

“My government, the new federal government, will be joining this initiative, and we will try to reach a decision together. I know that in the end we live in a world where we can give answers together across the European Union. That’s also the goal of the new federal government,” he added.

Tusk highlighted the need for Berlin to increase defence spending to increase security on the continent.

“With history in mind, it’s not easy to say it out loud as Poland’s prime minister.

“Polish armed Germany is not a popular slogan, but fortunately, today we live in a different Germany, different Poland, a time of different threats.”

Mertz says his government plans to station more police at the country’s borders to curb illegal migration and to separate asylum seekers.
