Exclusive: Watermelon Pictures has acquired international sales rights for US student protest documentary Campand will launch the title at Cannes Market next week.
Munir Atalla is selling in the Watermelon film, which is making its Cannes sales debut at The Suite.
Camp It depicts the protests of Columbia University’s student against the war in Gaza. It sparked a solidarity uprising with the Palestinians on campuses nationwide, leading to students facing the university’s economic ties with the US and Israeli military industry.
The film is directed by Michael T. Workman and Kay Plitsker and features Mahmoud Khalil, a detained student activist at risk of deportation from the United States after a ruling from a Louisiana judge last month.
The film is produced by Pretzcan, Workman, Matthew Belen and Atala, along with executive producers such as Benjamin Becker and Grammy-winning music artist Macklemore for groundbreaking news and watermelon photos.
After its world premiere at CPH:DOX, Watermelon released the film in the US this March, earning $80,000 over the weekend and nearly $500,000 from its limited release.
Camp It will then be available on Watermelon+, a streaming platform from Watermelon Pictures.
“The film isn’t just about the American student movement, it’s about a generation that stands around the world,” Atala said, but Justin DiPietro, EVP of Watermelon Photography, has proven that the US box office results are “a strong desire for politically conscious storytelling.”
“Distributors and exhibitors around the world are dealing with the urgent themes of the film: young-led resistance, institutional accountability, and cross-border solidarity.
Watermelon’s photo was founded last year by brothers Hamji Ali and Buddy Ali, with Alana Hadid serving as creative director. The film focuses on Palestinian culture and creativity From Ground Zero As a Palestinian entry, we made the most of Oscar’s finalists list.
