Patrick Kane gave insight into his future in the NHL and hinted at him towards the exit from the Detroit Red Wings for the 2026 season.
Patrick Kane hints towards the exit of the Detroit Red Wings
With the build-up until the 2023/24 season, the Detroit Red Wings made an interesting addition to the roster as they signed NHL veteran Patrick Kane.
Despite his skepticism about the signature, Kane was a wise decision from Detroit, showing that he scored 91 points in his first season, the best from the player since 2017.
As of May 12, 2025, the 36-year-old had contributed 106 points and scored 41 goals in 122 appearances he made over two seasons.
However, Kane’s age means his time in the NHL is nearing the end, and on July 1st he will become a free agent. In other words, his future at this point is unknown.
The Detroit Red Wings may be keen to extend his deal by another year, and Kane has shut down rumors over his retirement, but it also suggests that a move from Detroit could be on the card.
He said (via the red wing): “I still love the game. It’s my life. It’s what I want to do, what I think about every day. That’s how I take care of my body, how I take care of myself, what I want to do this summer, what I want to do next year’s ice.
“Preparation between games, I love all of that and don’t think to stop right away.
“I definitely take a little while, but overall I really enjoyed my time here. I think it’s a great place to continue playing my career.
“There are a lot of great things about organizations that not only helped me with injuries, but also helped me find and play good roles within the team, and I think there is definitely mutual interest in going back here and continuing here.
With retirements off the card, there is a list of potential suitors who may be interested in offering Kane a new deal, and the 36-year-old may look to a team that is likely to win the fourth Stanley Cup.
