Google Discover, a personalized content feed that is usually seen on mobile devices, began quietly rolling out to desktop users starting in Australia and New Zealand this May.
The new feature will be on the Google homepage with curated streams of articles, sports scores, weather updates and more, and is expected to be officially exhibited at the Google I/O 2025 conference, which will begin on Monday, May 20, 2025.
What does Google discover and how does it work?
Google Discover is a personalized news feed that suggests articles, videos and updates based on what interests you, without having to search anything.
Until now, it was only available on Android phones, tablets, and Google mobile apps. But that’s changing as users in Australia and New Zealand report that they’re looking directly at their feeds on the desktop version of Google.com.
How does Google look and feel the desktop version?
Unlike the mobile version where feeds dominate the screen, desktop feeds sit neatly under the Google search bar, including:
- A square thumbnail on the left side of each story
- Short text preview for the article on the right
- Customizable categories such as finance, Sportsand weather
- Settings menu for adjusting feeds (3 vertical dots)
According to It’s a community, Ukrainian users also access it by changing their browser language and using Chromebooks. Screenshots shared online show a clean interface with a more compact design than mobile.
Why it’s important for everyday users of online news
This update may change the way your computer consumes news and information. Instead of relying on bookmarks and social media, Google Discover is able to easily take a quick look at relevant content as soon as you open your browser. Whether it’s the latest news headlines, soccer team scores, personal finance tips, trending videos, technical reviews and more. Everything is in one place and automatically tailored to your interests.
There is no confirmation date for the global rollout, but the sign points to a wider release in the coming months. Google has confirmed that the extension is in progress, but some US English-speaking users are still not seeing the feature.
You can hear more details at the Google I/O 2025 meeting. At last month’s Search Central Live event in Madrid, Google said it was working to expand its discovery, and this quiet desktop rollout appears to be part of that plan.
What about content creators and online news publishers?
This is also a big deal for people who run websites and blogs. Google Discover is known for sending large amounts of traffic to mobile-optimized sites. Nowadays, when feeds come to the desktop, we have the opportunity to reach even more users, especially as search habits change and AI-generated summaries reduce traditional clicks.
As Search Engine Land In the note, discoveries can become a critical traffic source for websites that aim to regain loss of visibility.
Some enjoy the clean look of a search-only Google homepage, while others appreciate the convenience of content at a glance. You may get used to it, but this can be a welcome change for those who enjoy curated content without the noise of social media.
Still, it is worth noting that you can customize or mute topics you don’t care about.
