At least 30 people have been killed and several others have been missing after heavy rain and flooding in northern China, officials said Monday.
Thousands of people, including the capital Beijing, have been evacuated as a region, and are supported for more rainfall overnight.
The victim was caught in a landslide in rural Luang Ping County, Hebei province, adjacent to the capital, reported the state broadcaster CCTV.
Eight people are missing. Residents told the state-backed Beijing news that communications were down and relatives could not be reached.
Beijing authorities said they would launch top-level emergency responses at 8pm on Monday, ordering people to stay, closing schools, halting construction work and halting outdoor tourism and other activities until responses are lifted.
The heaviest rains in Beijing were expected after midnight, with rainfall of up to 30 centimeters expected in some areas.
In the Miyun district, a suburb of Beijing, floods were seen as cars parked in apartments shown by the state broadcaster.
Authorities had been warning people to drain water from the city’s main source of water, Miyun Reservoir, and to stay away from the river as levels increased.
Officials said the reservoirs have recorded the highest levels since record-keeping began in 1951, and 4,015 people have been evacuated to avoid flooding.
Around 5,600 people have migrated in nearby Tianjin city for fear of flooding, CCTV reported.
In a statement, the central government sent 50 million yuan (6 million euros) to Hebei, sending a high-level team of emergency responders to support affected cities.
Beijing and Hebei were hit by severe flooding in 2023, killing at least 81 people and 34 people gone missing.
