What is the best Zomboid Mods project? Mods can be applied to most games, but there is something particularly special about sandbox games, and I feel that almost anything is possible. Project Zomboid is the perfect example of this, featuring a complete game extension transformation and simple quality of life improvements.
Although Project Zomboid has been released since 2013, the Zombie game has become more popular recently, with tens of thousands of players returning to the Build 42 update. There are many mods to improve your experience, and ModDers has already updated the mods for B42. Currently, there are the best project Zomboid Mods available for survival games.
Here are the best projects of 2025: Zomboid Mods:
Water pipe
Version: B42
Try automating some of the labour that resembles Stardew Valley, including proper agriculture. Water pipe mods allow you to build a plumbing system that draws water from lakes, wells and other sources and uses it to keep your crops hydrated. It also fills a barrel of water, so it’s never going to be refreshing.
Washing rain
The Rain Wash Mod adds a small but immersive feature that slowly cleans your clothes when you’re in the rain. Is it covered in blood? no problem! The blood slowly turns into dirt, and then if it remains exposed to the elements, the dirt will gradually wash away. I’m not sure if it’s a good cleaning alternative, but I’ll do it in a pinch.
The creator of the thief
Version: B42
In an extended version of Slayer’s Bandits Mod, the creators of Bandits project Zomboid by adding new, hostile human NPCs. Bandits adds basic hostile NPCs, but Bandits Creator Mods can assign traits to these humans and determine how they attempt to affect your survival. For example, an electrician will damage the generator, but a mechanic will interfere with your car. Additionally, you can determine how strict your NPCs are, how often they are displayed, and other customizable aspects. Slayer is also the creator behind the incredible week 1, even down the list, so you know you’re in good hands.
Secretz Pandemic
Version: B42
Map Enhancement Mod, Secretz Pandemic, adds several military checkpoints, a front post base, and even several secret bunkers. Use these to prepare, but be aware of what’s out there, including some additional items that suggest that the army may know a little more than they have allowed…
Occupation-based starting gear
Version: B42
The occupation-based Starting Gear Mod offers each game of each Zomboid occupation with a separate gear set that is in stock when you start a new game. If you are a police officer, you will already have your standard problem handgun and holster, and if you are a chef, why don’t you have a can opener in your pocket?
This mod adds a bit of nuance to your initial occupational choice. You may have opted out of nurse work in your previous run, but now you start with a lot of medical supplies? That could certainly be a very wise decision.
common sense
Common Sense Mod adds some quality of life changes that just… have a general meaning. Pry open the door with a clover, make a makeshift spear from the broom, and open the can with a knife. These are things we find pretty plausible and with this mod you can run it on Zomboid too!
One week
Version: B42
The stock version of Project Zomboid drops straight into the Zombie Apocalypse when you start the game, but what if you want to see how the events unfold? With the mod installed, the game actually starts 7 days before it occurs.
We recently reported on the Epic Week One Mod by Slayer, and it is definitely one of our favorites. Of course, week one is not technically Canon, but if you are, I’m happy to be able to accept it that way.
Television and radio have been reinvented
Version: B42
It may not attack you as one of the most important things added to Project Zomboid, but once you install the TV and radio reinvention mod, you won’t look back.
This mod adds interactivity and interface to in-game TV sets and radios, and introduces a new layer of immersion into sandbox games. So, when your character lives and how to live, picking up new skills, you can enjoy the actual TV show at the same time to sit and watch.
They knew
Version: B42
Thanks to the new drug types introduced by mods they know, you can heal zombie viruses, but you need to do so every time you get infected. There is also the option to slow the deterioration and lengthen it to find a treatment. In addition, infection prevention drugs will resist 24 hours a day.
This already adds some interesting items to the game, but the creators also promise a new zombie, items, and a unique NPC trading system, as well as an expanded universe of mods. I’ll update if I hear more about this mod extension.
Automatic gate
Version: B41/B42
There are several zomboid mods that automate gates, and here are projects for B41 and B42. Autogate for the B41 does what you expect by adding an autogate. A small but powerful change considering the potential death waiting for you outside the car door.
The automatic gate for the B42 is almost the same, giving you the option to flash the car lights and open the gate. Both mods need to work to build the gates, but they do have a lower risk of being eaten on the way home. Depending on the size of the vehicle, both mods limit automation to double doors, double metal pole gates, and double metal wire gates.
Overhaul of vehicle repairs
Version: B41/B42
These PZ mechanisms between us are certainly frustrating that there is no choice when it comes to modifying the in-game wagon. Well, all the changes change with the huge vehicle repair overhaul mod. This is designed with real mechanics and welders in mind.
Repair flat tires, retrieve old vehicles into parts, weld those parts into motors, repair your favorite broken car. You’ll lose countless hours of tinkering around in your garage, but that’s not a bad thing. Vehicle repair overhauls are available for both the B41 and B42, but the Salvage option is not available for the B42 yet.
Generator time remaining
Version: B42
It can be frustrating to not know how long the generator fuel lasts. After all, it is one of the most important resources you have for survival. The remaining mods in the generator help to solve this by adding the remaining days and times after the percentage.
Unfortunately, the mod does not add the same changes to the condition. This is definitely important. It will probably be added in time, but at least the amount of fuel gives you a rough idea of when you’re looking for more.
Braven’s bike
Version: B41
A bike may not be your first choice to escape a horde of zombies, but it’s better than your own legs. The Awesome Braven’s Bicycles Mod adds a variety of bike types, each with their own stats. You can also add trailers to bring back cleaned resources. Of course, the advantage of a bike is that it doesn’t require gas or batteries, but peddlers will tire you out and leave you more vulnerable to attacks.
Vanilla Firearm Expansion
Version: B41
Vanilla Firearms Expansion adds a variety of new weapons and replaces existing gun textures to create an overhauled arsenal. Blow away zombies, such as a semi-automatic spas 12 shotgun, maggot SMG or AK-47. The new attachments offer another way to kippit weapons, such as magazines that have a fast reload and stabilized bipods.
Perhaps the best addition given by VFE is the rework of the jamming mechanic. Now, if you clear the jammed firearm, if the gun is completely dropped off before the gun clears, the lost circle will be returned. The Vanilla Firearms Mod is one of the community’s favorites for reasons, but is still limited to the B41. Sadly, the founder of the mod passed away in February 2025. This is naturally pending during mod updates to B42.
Helicopter Event Expansion
Version: B41
In Vanilla Games, helicopter events take place towards the beginning of a playthrough, drawing a horde of zombies towards you thanks to its large sirens. The expanded helicopter event mod has led to more of these chaotic incidents, including crashed choppers, sirens and more.
As one of the community’s favorite mods, the expanded helicopter event had to be on our list, but it’s worth noting that it’s only compatible with Build 41 for now. Chuckleberry Finn, one of the creators, says he is planning to update the B42.
Exhibition Circuit
The exhibition circuit mod adds a racetrack to the Zomboid map and penetrates several flashy sports cars. Perfect for practicing your driving skills or hijacking a lovely ride to help you survive in style. It’s a small mod, but it adds a nice and fun area to something that can be a pretty harsh environment.
Skateboarding!
Version: B42
Not as fast as a car, but rad your skateboarding infinitely! The mod adds a rideable skateboard to the Zomboid so you can reach A to B in style. Surprisingly, you can press G to pop Ollie. If the board is too damaged, it can even be repaired. A must-have item.
