Jordan’s search and rescue team recovered the bodies of their Belgian mother and son the day after the woman and her three children were reported missing in flash floods.

It turns out that the other two children from the same family are alive.

The floods in southern Jordan on Sunday evacuated hundreds of tourists from the Petra Archaeological Site, the country’s main tourist attraction.

The mother and children were part of a group of 18 tourists who were on an adventure trip in Wadi al-Nakil when they were caught up in the gun flood, Maan District Governor Hassan al-Jabul told the state’s media broadcaster Al Mamuraka TV.

Fourteen tourists, all Czech nationals, were rescued on Sunday.

Rescuers found two children alive later on Sunday, according to Al Jabul.

The search and rescue operation was stopped around 2am due to complex weather conditions and terrain.

The bodies of the woman and her son were found Monday morning after the search resumed, he said.

Details regarding family and children’s age were not available immediately.

Jordan often experiences flash floods. Because the heavy rains of the season send rapids through arid desert valleys.

At least three people died when floods wiped out cars in 2021, and more than 30 people died in flash floods that struck Petra and the Jordanian Dead Sea coast in two separate floods in 2018.
