Brick According to Brazilian President Louis Inacio Lula da Silva, the Bloc will meet to discuss President Donald Trump’s joint response to the tariff threat. “What President Trump is doing is implicit. He wants to dismantle multilateralism, where agreements will be made collectively within the agency and replace them with one-sided negotiating with one and the other,” Lula tells Reuters.
Lula says he will begin a conversation with the BRICS group in developing countries about how to deal with Trump and the latest US tariffs. He added that he will call India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and later China’s Xi Jinping and other leaders on Thursday. “I will discuss with them how each of them is doing in this situation and what it means for each country.
Where BRICS tariffs currently stand
Currently, US Brazil’s tariffs are at 50%, and India has increased to 50% today with an additional 25% tariff by Trump. Tariffs on China and the US are currently suspended, but Russian tariffs are over 30%. Trump labeled BRICS “anti-American” and threatened the block with 10% tariffs last month. Some members of the bloc are discussing trade transactions with the US, including India and China, to limit tariffs. However, a unified BRICS effort against the US and its tariff threats may be the only way to limit damages.
Additionally, Lula emphasized that Brazil currently holds the BRICS presidency. In his interview, he added that he would like to discuss whether Trump is attacking multilateralism with his allies and what his goal is. He did not imply direct talks about a unified future between Trump and BRICS members.
Over the past few days, Trump has unleashed the massive trade and trade movements that led to his voluntary deadline. These include a 35% tariff in Canada, a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods, and a 15% tariff on EU goods. All tariffs come with Trump’s tariff deadline approaching the end of this week.
