Cannes kabuki drama ‘Kokuho’ lands Asia, Europe distribution deals

Exclusive: Lee Sang-The Japanese drama Hello It was picked up by Asian and European distributors after it premiered in two weeks of directorial title at Cannes last month.

Tokyo-based Aniplex Inc. has sold films set in the world of Kabuki to Korea (Media Castle), Hong Kong (EDKO) and Taiwan (film products). Paris-based Pyramide International, which is responsible for sales outside of Asia, has closed deals in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg (September film) and Switzerland (Trigon). The story centers around the son of a yakuza boss played by Yoshizawa, who is taken under the wings of the famous Utagawa actor, played by Watanabe Ken, after his father’s death. The young man, along with the biological son of a veteran actor (Yokohama Egg and Yokohama Hayashi), devotes his life to the art of Kama of, a classic form of Japanese theatre known for his costumes and elaborate makeup.

The three-hour film spans 50 years as their two sons experience glory, downfall, scandal and victory.
