Young U.S. Coast Guard swimmers are welcomed with their heroes after saving more than 200 people during their first-ever mission as a fatal flash flood wiped out Texas over the weekend of July 4th.
Corpus Christi-based Petty Officer Scott Ruskan was deployed in Carr County, where heavy rains allowed the Guadalupe River to rise 26 feet in just 45 minutes, washing away homes, vehicles and campsites.

The courage of Laskan faced danger
Despite being on his first official rescue mission, Laskan is the only triage coordinator in the camp, where hundreds of children were stuck.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard, he rescued 165 people directly and provided medical assistance to dozens more, helping a total of around 230 flood victims.
“We saw a huge crowd of about 200 children at the campsite,” Ruskan said. Fox and friends. “We were like, ‘Cool, that’s going to go where we go and kick as many people as possible.’ ”

“They were all scared, terrifying, cold, and perhaps the worst day of their lives.”
Ruskan’s quick thinking and courage are recognized nationwide.
“This was the first rescue mission of his career, and he was the only triage coordinator on the scene,” wrote Christie Noem, Secretary of Homeland Security in X.
The Coast Guard received a warning from the Texas A&M Task Force at 5:57am on July 4th. The team was immediately mobilized to several affected sites.
Who is Scott Laskan?
Raskan grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Rider University in 2021. He joined the US Coast Guard in 2022 and is currently working as a rescue swimmer.
“I really relied on the training we got,” he said. “Coast Guard rescue swimmers have the highest level of training in the world.”
As recovery efforts continued throughout Texas, Ruskan’s actions brought a powerful message of hope to one of the state’s darkest moments.
