In 2024, Democrat Taylor Lehmet won the Texas Senate race in a district that then-President Donald Trump led by 17 points, flipping a long-held Republican seat in a low-turnout special election that both parties say provides lessons for the fall.

The victory came on the same night that Democrat Christian Menefe won a special election for a Texas House seat, narrowing the already slim Republican majority in the chamber.
