“Disney were convinced I was ruining the movie”: Johnny Depp on making ‘Pirates Of The Caribbean’

Johnny Depp reflected on his troubled relationship with Disney while making the film. pirates of the caribbean At a master class session on acting techniques at the Saudi Film Confex in Riyadh today (October 22).

Regarding his approach to acting, Depp recalled Disney’s dissatisfaction with his interpretation of the eccentric character Captain Jack Sparrow.

“They hated me so much. Disney despised me and was convinced I was ruining the movie,” Depp said of the role, which was famously modeled in part on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards.

Depp went on to talk about the importance for actors to trust their instincts and have the support of their director.

“There has to be trust on both sides between the actor and the director. There has to be a balance. There has to be compromise in film, but not to extremes like having an accountant tell you how to play your character.”

He said the characters he’s developed throughout his career are drawn from some of his own personality and emotional experiences, adding that it’s important for actors to look “just below the words” in a script and understand the dialogue.

Depp said audiences have been “disrespected” by Hollywood for years. “The audience wants to think, they want to believe, they want to be surprised and they want to feel for themselves.”

He said he could “barely admit” that he was an actor and hadn’t seen any of the movies he starred in for years. “I don’t think I’ve ever gone into[a role]completely satisfied. I always feel like there’s something more I can add.”

“I hate looking at myself,” Depp said.

The actor spoke on the opening day of the third edition of the film business event “Saudi Film Confex”, which will be held until October 25th.
