Exclusive: Repurposing Bangkok-based sales agent has made its way into Ash May Fair’s Vietnamese transgender drama Young people’s skinHe is scheduled to compete at the New York Asian Film Festival (NYAFF).
After his debut in 2018 The third wifePremiering in Toronto and winning over 20 awards worldwide, Mayfair’s second feature focuses on the turbulent romance between transgender sex workers trying to realize their dream of living in a female body in Saigon in the 1990s and the dream of an underground cage fighter.
This marks the first Vietnamese fiction feature to cast a transperson in a major role. Main actress Tran Quang is a 19-year-old trans girl who has never acted on screen before. She will appear on the other side of Vo dien gia huy from the 2023 mystery thriller infantry Horror TV Series Devil’s Diner.
“Our working conditions were extremely difficult. In our country, openly and strange and trances are still not fully accepted,” he said, spending several months with the cast and visiting to rewrite the locations of the story’s dialogue and visits to get used to the character’s world.
The film tells her that the brothers are two-year-old transgender and are now 17 years old, so it’s a 15-year-old story. “The young trans people I have since met in Vietnam have inspiring and impressed me endlessly with their resilience and light. This film is my attempt to share a small part of their journey.”
Mayfair lives between Los Angeles and Ho Chi Minh City. The film is one of four winners on the NYU Purple List of the best non-generated scripts written by alumni and is a semi-finalist of the 2020 Academy Nichols Competition. Her special debut, The third wifewon three Spirit Award nominations, including someone looking for a category for themselves.
Young people’s skin The co-produced costumes for Vietnamese Anam Productions, Donga Films, Singapore’s Akanga Film Asia, and Japan’s bitterness is over, and the costumes for the US Mayfair Pictures. The film was released in theaters in Japan through the villain in March and will feature a North American premiere at Nyaff on July 24th, where it will win the Unreleased Award.
The repurposed product has acquired worldwide sales rights outside of Vietnam, Singapore and Japan. The deal was handled by diverted My Mexawan and film’s signature producer Tran Thi Bich Ngoc of Annam Productions.
The conversion slate also features the debut feature of Bangladeshi filmmaker Mahde Hasan Sand CityIt is set for the world premiere of Karlovy.
