Local media reports say that buses carrying Afghan immigrants collided with trucks and motorsils killed at least 79 people in Afghanistan, northwestern Afghanistan.
The clash occurred Tuesday evening in Herat – caused a massive fire that killed many people on the spot, according to Tolo News. Two people were also injured after crashing, according to Abdul Mateen Qani, a spokesman for the Ministry of Home Affairs.
State government official Ahmadura Muttaki shared a video of X showing the burnout structure of a bus engulfed in flames. The footage could not be independently verified by Euroneus.
Although road accidents are common in Afghanistan, this is considered one of the worst crashes in years, mainly due to poor road conditions and lack of driving restrictions.
The Taliban criticized neighbors in July for mass expulsion of Afghans in order to expel foreigners who Iran and Pakistan say they live illegally.
Tehran and Islamabad have denied targeting Afghans who have fled their homelands for decades to escape war, poverty or Taliban rule.
In the past few months, around 1.8 million Afghans have been forced to return from Iran.
Another 184,459 people were sent back from Pakistan, and more than 5,000 people were deported from Türkiye since the beginning of the year.
Additionally, around 10,000 Afghan prisoners, mostly from Pakistan, have been deported.
The Ministry of Refugees and Repatriation in Afghanistan said about 6 million Afghan refugees remain overseas.
