The driver, who injured nearly 80 people when the car ploughed into a crowd of soccer fans in central Liverpool, who were celebrating the team’s Premier League victory, was charged with intentionally causing serious physical harm and six serious counts, prosecutors said.
Paul Doyle, 53, was also charged with five other counts claiming dangerous driving and different variations that cause severe physical harm, prosecutor Sarah Hammond said.
Police said 79 people were injured in the attack and at least 50 people were treated at the hospital. They ranged from 9 to 78 years old.
Seven people are hospitalized in stable condition.
The charges did not show how many casualties the count was linked to. Hammond and Merseyside Police Assistant Jenny Sims did not ask questions during a brief press conference in Liverpool.
“We fully understand how this incident shocks us all and saddens us, and we know that many continue to have concerns and questions,” Sims said.
“Our detectives strive tirelessly with hard work and professionalism to seek answers to all these questions.”
The city was celebrating Liverpool’s record 20th title.
Police said they believe Doyle will dodge road blocks by tailing the ambulance in response to reports of people with cardiac arrest.
The video of the witness showed a terrifying scene as the car was covered in Liverpool flags and attacked and threw people in the air towards the sea of people crammed on the side of the road.
Merseyside police said the driver was believed to have acted alone and did not suspect the terrorist attack.
