Elon Musk has been officially plucked from Washington. And it’s fair to say that sparks were flying halfway through.
The world’s wealthiest man has confirmed he has resigned from his post in Donald Trump’s administration and ended up as the head of his short but headline grabbing government efficiency – lovingly (or awkwardly) dubbing Doge.
Musk played the role of Special civil servantsbrought to create a bureaucracy and reduce federal spending. And while his departure has been scheduled for a long time, 130 days a year is the legal limit – timing frowns and comes hours after he publicly criticizes Trump’s cornerstone tax and spending bills.
In a statement about X (formerly Twitter), Musk wrote:
“As our scheduled time as a special government employee is coming to an end, I would like to thank President @RealdonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending. The @Doge mission will be strengthened over time as it will become a government-wide lifestyle.”
But behind the polite post is one of the budget bills that threatened to cancel the very job he enlisted to carry out, in the eyes of the economic ambition, political friction, and Musk.
Vision conflict: Excessive efficiency encounters?
Doge was a mask attempt to bring Silicon Valley-style rationalization to the US government. His former target? Cool $2 trillion cut. It was later revised to $150 billion, but still bold to any standard.
And then there was the outcome: nearly 260,000 federal jobs were reduced or ended with acquisitions and early retirements. However, some of the layoffs sparked controversy, and courts intervened after a division like the US nuclear program was hit by mistake.
Musk admitted his tension and said Washington Post:
“I thought there was a problem, but to say the least, I’m sure it’s a tough fight to improve things in DC.”
And that difficult fight suddenly came last week with Trump’s new bill – One big beautiful invoice – I walked through the house. Based on several Trump campaign promises, it adds an estimated $2.3 trillion to the deficit, while filing several Trump campaign promises.
Speaking to CBS, Musk said:
“I think the bill will grow, or it’s beautiful. But I don’t know if it’s both.”
Tesla turbulence applies pressure
While Musk was busy in DC, what returned to Tesla was far from Autopilot.
The company recorded a 71% decline in quarterly profit. This is the most sharp decline in years. Also, vehicle delivery fell sharply (down 13%), with stock prices falling 45% at one point.

Musk later admitted that his focus had grown thinly, telling investors that he “allocates much more of my time to Tesla.”
It was a practical pivot – something some investors quietly wanted.
A costly political chapter?
Musk’s role in the Trump administration was by no means ritual. He became one of the president’s most prominent supporters, spending nearly $300 million on Trump’s 2024 campaign and Republican causes.
He pledged another $100 million in the midterm in 2026, but as of this week it is suggested that the checks are invalid.
Well, that era appears to be depicted nearby. Speaking at Qatar’s forum, Musk clearly said:
“I think I did it well.”
There were also reports of tensions with senior White House officials and frustration over Musk being excluded from a large open contract involving Abu Dhabi.
What is Doge now?
The White House says the Doge program will continue, with or without musk. However, it is difficult to ignore the initiative’s most recognizable face, and biggest character, moving forward.
Whether Doge will thrive or Fade will likely depend on what happens next in Trump’s bill, which is facing pushbacks from within his own party.
For Musk, this chapter ends with a nod to public services. Probably a hint of fatigue from the political battlefield.

Mask’s departure is not a dramatic split, but it’s not exactly a warm farewell either. This is the end of a bold experiment by the technological government. It shows a flash of promise, a flash of chaos, a lack of headlines.
For now, billionaires are returning to familiar territory: roller coasters of rockets, robots and electric vehicle sales. He has a lot to organize in his backyard.
But in Washington, Doge remains.
