South African-born billionaire Elon Musk announced overnight on Thursday. He announced that he had left his role as top advisor to US President Donald Trump about five months later at the helm of the newly created government efficiency (DOGE).
In his Platform X post, Musk thanked the US president for the opportunity to lead the initiative Trump Trump, which was approved through an executive order on his first day.
“As the time scheduled for special government officials is coming to an end, I would like to thank President Donald Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote in X.
“Doge Mission will be strengthened over time as it will become a government-wide lifestyle,” he added.
Musk announced his decision the day after CBS released some of the interview. He criticized Trump’s legislative agenda, saying he was “disappointed” by what the president calls his “big beautiful bill.”
The law combines tax cuts with increased immigration enforcement. Musk described it as a “large spending bill” that would increase the federal deficit and “damage the “work” known as the Doge” of his ministry of government efficiency.
“I think the bill will grow, or maybe it would be beautiful,” Musk said. “But I don’t know if it’s both.”
Cuts in spending and clashes with other Trump allies
Musk’s departure from Doge marks the end of the chapter, which includes thousands of layoffs, dismantling government agencies and dismantling lawsuits.
The billionaire entrepreneur struggled in the unfamiliar environment of Washington, accomplishing far less than he originally wanted.
He reduced the target of dramatically reducing government spending from $2 trillion (1.78 trillion euros) to $1 trillion (889 million euros), and another $150 billion (13.3 billion euros). He also frequently expresses frustration about increased resistance to Doge’s operation.
However, he clashed with other top members of the Trump administration. The Trump administration struggled with the newcomers’ efforts to rebuild their divisions and faced a fierce political blow due to his efforts.
The role of Musk working for Trump is always intended to be temporary, and he has recently made its notice that he will turn his attention to running his business, including electric car maker Tesla, rocket company SpaceX, and social media platforms.
However, administrative authorities were often vague about when Musk retreated from his position at Doge.
The masks were previously energised by the opportunity to rebuild Washington. After placing at least $250 million (222 million euros) on Trump’s candidacy.
He often wore Trump’s Magazine (which makes America great again) in the White House, held his own campaign rallies, and was always generous to the admiration of the US president.
“The more I know President Trump, the more I like that guy,” Musk said in February. “Frankly, I love him.”
But just as Musk expressed his struggle to actually bring about change to the US media, Washington’s bureaucracy appears to have diluted his patience.
“The situation in federal bureaucracy is far worse than I noticed,” Musk said. “I thought there was a problem, but to say the least, I’m sure it’s a tough fight to improve things in DC.”
Musk announced last week that he plans to take a step back from politics, saying he will spend a lot of money in the future supporting candidates.
