The Schumen region in northeastern Bulgaria has become highly wary as it searches for wild predators known as the loose Black Panther on Tuesday on the fifth day.
Residents of nearby Shumen City have been warned of potentially life-threatening dangers, but authorities have restricted access to the national park of the same name, where fresh prints were found Monday.
Local media reports say traps and food are set to try to seduce predators, but animal experts are supporting their pursuit efforts.
Experts at Buglaria believe the most likely explanation for the Black Panther sighting is that the animals escaped from an illegal private zoo as authorities struggle to eliminate the ownership of their exotic pets.
They also warn that animals are extremely dangerous and pose a serious threat and should not be underestimated. People are warned to avoid the area and slowly retreat when they see the animal, avoiding sudden movements.
Officials added that the Panther is not a clear species and that the predator in question is a black leopard or a black jaguar.
The animal is believed to have lived in the wild for several weeks and is considered to be on the move, with the Stara Planina Mountain Range reaching the border with nearby Serbia.
It’s not the first time a big cat has been reported to be loose in Europe. Residents reported seeing Panthers around Bali, Italy in 2021, leading authorities to warn the public to avoid the countryside.
Officials in eastern Slovakia also urged residents to pay attention after the tiger was discovered in an area near the border in 2022.
While some experts dispute the truthfulness of these claims, some experts have also had several stories about sightings of rumors of Panther roaming the countryside.
