Twenty-seven foreign ministers from the EU are visiting Japan, with Iran at the top of the agenda. EU ministers are expected to approve new sanctions after the regime’s recent crackdown on protesters left thousands dead, while Iran remains wary of a possible U.S. attack as President Trump ramps up pressure on Iran to agree to a deal on its nuclear program. From the European Council, we will be represented by EU correspondent Shona Murray.
Xavier Bettel is one of the 27 foreign ministers currently in Brussels. He has led Luxembourg for 10 years and is also currently deputy prime minister. Vettel joins our studio to take part in a live interview with Mared Gwynne and today he’ll be doing it for Maeve McMahon.
Next, we turn to NATO chief Mark Rutte, whose comments on EU defense earlier this week angered Europeans. Our own Jakub Janas took this opportunity to delve into who he really is to viewers.
Finally, we will travel to Italy. There, there is growing public backlash over the U.S. decision to send ICE immigration agents involved in the recent shooting in Minneapolis to the Winter Olympics in Italy next week. Italy correspondent Giorgia Orlandi will be filling in for us from Rome.
