Spanish producer Julio Fernández of founder of spanish Filmax Group, have died 78 years old.

A self-made businessman, Fernández has built the Barcelona-based company into one of Spain’s leading entertainment groups, spanning production, distribution, international sales and exhibitions.

Julio Fernandez, president of Filmax Group until 2010, died on Monday in Miami. He stepped down from his position in 2010, leaving the company in the hands of his brother Carlos and daughter Laura.

Mr. Fernandez acquired Filmax in 1987. The brand was originally founded in 1953 by former MGM sales manager Alfredo Talarewicz and specialized in distributing Hollywood productions in Spain.

Under Fernandes’ leadership, Filmax developed into an active production company. He oversaw the production of over 100 films and the distribution of over 1,000 features.

Fernandez launched Filmax Animation four years later, alongside the Fantastic Factory label he founded with American producer and director Brian Yuzna in 2000. Based in his hometown of Galicia, the animation division has produced projects including a Goya Award-winning feature film. El Cid: The Legend.

As an international distributor, Filmax is present in all major markets and festivals. The company opened a Barcelona multiplex in the early 2000s and expanded into exhibitions.
