Arrowhead Games was able to do something really special with Helldivers 2. I took an incredible top-down original space shooter and turned it into a real epic, making it great from the start. But now it wants to have serious competition courtesy of the new FPS Jump ship. Already boasting a wish list of over 700,000, the cooperative space archer has maintained its place as one of the biggest Steam Next Fest Demos for the past week, and is ready for release this year.

Jumpships have many similarities to the general loops of Heldy Bar, or something like Deep Rock Galactic. Drop onto the planet and return to the ship in time to scrutinize and extract new weapons, parts and loot. All this will blow up through and through the horde of enemies. However, the only time this FPS really comes into its own is when you prepare for takeoff.

Rather than a simple loading screen and lobby to the next map, you (and your teammates if you’re playing in a cooperative) will have to fly the ship across the stars. The whole process is seamless, giving the jump ship a little more manly air of air, encapsulating true scale and spectacles that will make the best space game shine.

While one player takes the wheel and carefully pilots the asteroid field, others may sit in the seat of the turret to protect the raiders, or grab a fire extinguisher to deal with the nasty fire after a fierce encounter. The more materials you gather on the ground, the more you can customize your ship, to withstand greater impacts, deal heavier damage, and navigate a variety of challenges.

The result is a sublime fusion of coordinated chaos, with the jump ships in which the Heldivirs willfully evacuate, supporting its rude military industrial complex. The demo, which secures the third highest spot on Valve’s Steam Next Fest Charts, is clearly clicking with people keen on the intergalactic co-op game. With tutorial prologue and some missions in the first region, the final game tastes a little, but it’s complete with up to four players multiplayer features.

The Jump Ship is scheduled to be released in 2025. The demo is still alive until Monday, June 16th, so if you read this as soon as I write it, you may have time to sneak in for yourself and find out what all the fuss is.
