WASHINGTON – A political earthquake struck New York City on the night of June 24th. State Senator Zohran Mamdani was elected the Democratic candidate for mayor in the 2025 general election.

Mamdani, a 33-year-old self-descriptive democratic socialist, won 56% of the votes for former Governor Andrew Cuomo, the state’s latest political dynasty. As a Democratic candidate leading one of the nation’s most democratically leaning cities, Mamdani has traditionally been a favorite to win the November general election.
