German ambassador to Ukrainians Martin Jäger reported that German media reported on Wednesday, citing government sources.
Jager replaces Bruno Karl as the German spy chief, and Karl is set up to win the Vatican ambassador.
The German government has not yet officially confirmed the changes.
Jaeger is considered an experienced crisis diplomat for his role as Ukrainian ambassador, which he has buried since 2023, the year after Russia’s full-scale invasion of the country.
He previously served as ambassador to Iraq and Afghanistan.
In Germany, Jaeger, a member of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party, served as a spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, and was later led by Wolfgang Schäuble.
He also worked as Secretary of State for the Home Office.
The federal intelligence agency is subordinate to the Prime Minister and is under Friedrich Merz, who is authorized to appoint a president.
BND is tasked with collecting and assessing information on the importance of foreign and security policies and providing reporting and analysis to the federal government.
BND is one of the few government agencies allowed to use information services such as spies.
According to German outlets, the German government is planning a fundamental restructuring of the intelligence reporting agency and hopes to provide more funding to the BND.
According to domestic press, BND will also be given more flexibility when it comes to spying and technical reconnaissance overseas.
