Is it a new “Superman” movie about Gaza?

The latest “Superman” film currently exceeds $468.8 million (345.65 million euros) worldwide, bringing a runaway box office gross.

The story follows a fictional US-backed Boravian superhero who is about to occupy the fictional, poor Jalhanpur.

Some posts online claim that the film’s images are highly reminiscent of Gaza images. Those making these claims refer to scenes like scenes where a child holds a flag in the face of an invasion, and elements such as border fences against a landscape that looks like Palestinian territory.

Boravia is engaged in high-tech military operations against Jalhanpur, whose residents are portrayed by Middle Eastern, South Asian and black actors. Meanwhile, the Boravians are played by white actors.

The Israeli Consulate General in Los Angeles appeared to respond to the film with two Facebook posts reading “real superheroes” along with images that looked like Israeli military.

Production began on October 7th

However, production, costume design and casting for “Superman” actually began in April 2023. Meanwhile, storyboarding took place in May and screen tests took place in June. Before Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023.

James Gunn, American director of “Superman,” said in an interview that the script was completed by October 7th. He argues there is no direct reference to Israel or Palestine. Gunn admitted that the film is “about politics,” but that the film is primarily about morality and kindness.

However, filming began on February 29th, 2024. This was after the attack on October 7, 2023.
