What would it be like if Gate 3 of Baldur was set in the Far East? The answer is Shadow of the roadbrings you to an alternative feudal Japan where magic and machinery are mixed together. And if you’re fully interested in that premise, you can play it now.

That doesn’t mean that the shadows of the road are far from it. It’s still an early age for this turn-based RPG game, dragging you into a conflict between the two fighting factions. Instead, the developer has another angle game fitted with playtests, giving Steam users a flavour of a luxurious, dangerous world.

Like Tsushima’s equally charming ghost, it starts with you on the loser of an epic battle. Your main characters, Satoru and Akira, are now Masterless Ronin, and are refuge in a restaurant, but not long. From the moment the battle continues and the bloody first geyser erupts from the enemy, you know you are taking part in a complete samurai adventure.

Soon you are taking on both your fellow compatriots and the loose, evil British of Moostash, who support the emperor. The demo is about an hour long, but it’s enough to give you a glimpse into some of the mechanics, including the experience system. You are also introduced as the mysterious boy Satoru, and Akira is charged with escort charges and head-on with the enemy of Squeixier in the game’s stranger.

To access Shadow of the Road PlayTest, simply go to the Steam page and hit Request Access. Please download about 15 GB and download it later.
