John McVay is to step down as chief executive of the UK Producer Organization Agreement after a quarter century of this role.

McVay will remain at PACT’s post office until the turn of the year, offering a comprehensive handover for the next Chief, depending on the progress of recruiting his successor.

He also stays over the transition period, providing strategic advice on his replacements, leading in the short and medium term of all work in the agreement and campaign. These timings have not been confirmed yet.

A working group consisting of members of the major council of agreements has been established, and will work closely with McVay to oversee his exit and ensure a smooth transition for his successor.

Executive search company Quicksmith leads the hunt for McVay alternatives.

During his 25-year tenure as PACT CEO, McVay oversaw a series of successful political lobbying campaigns for the production community, including the implementation of headlines for terms of trade, an important part of the Communications Act of 2003.

This has helped the UK television production sector grow into an industry that is £3.6 billion today. McVay has defended trade terms for potential amendments and removals for years.

He also contributed to the campaign for the introduction, and subsequent increases in tax credits for the Children, HETV and film sector, as well as the production reboot scheme, allowed production companies to return to work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are pleased to announce that Jane Muirhead, the agreement chair and CEO of Raise The Roof Productions,” said:

“It will be difficult to fill the shoes, but I am sure the process will find the right person and will have a smooth transition to ensure that members receive the exceptional services they have received over the last 25 years.”

The story was first released by Screen’s sister title broadcast.
