OpenAI’s new learning mode launched on July 29th, 2025. It aims to avoid students from AI-enabled fraud by providing interactive step-by-step guidance.
However, some educators say it’s not enough to fix what many call an “existential threat” to the humanities.
What is ChatGpt Study Mode?
According to an official Openai press release, Study Mode is designed to make ChatGPT a more responsible learning tool. Encourage deeper thinking by asking guide questions, building materials into manageable sections and providing knowledge checks tailored to the student’s level.

Study Mode is now available for all logged in users (Free, Plus, Pro, Team). Developed together with educators, scientists and pedagogical experts, it integrated principles such as metacognition, curiosity and self-reflection for AI learning.

Critics point out that despite its purpose, learning modes are optional. Students can click toggle and return to answer-only mode.
Vox’s thought-provoking work revealed the troublesome reality of using ChatGpt during his research. University teaching assistants acknowledge that essays generated in AI are very common. Enforcing the “no AI” rule means denounce half of the class.
